FabLab Lugano

Description

Opened in 2012, FabLab is located at the Laboratory of Visual Culture (Department of Environment Costructions and Design, SUPSI). It is the first one of its kind in south Switzerland. The FabLab is open mainly to SUPSI students, in particular for those who are taking the Master of advanced studies in interaction design and to workshop attendees.

A FabLab is a space open to students where it is possible to make ideas come true. Coming from the industrial precision, the tradition of handcrafted objects and the power of open-source, the FabLab allows students to play around their interaction design projects. Common applications include proof of concepts, functional testings and product mockups.

Our FabLab is equipped with a laser engraver and a 3D printer.

  1. On the one hand, the laser engraver allows students to cut 2D shapes out of solid surfaces. These shapes can be assembled into a working prototype, combining for example Arduino technology with a laser-cut skeleton.

  2. The 3D printer, on the other hand, allows students to build genuine objects from thin strands of thermoplastic. The only requirement is a CAD file the printer can read.
